Facilities
pug and pine construction hut, new roof, open doorways and windows, dirt floor, no beds, verandah on two sides, toilets nearby, rainwater, spring-fed water nearby, rubbish bins in adjoining campsite, 2WD/4WD accessible
History
Built in 1925 as an outstation for Eddie Pumpa. A four-roomed dwelling with a stone fire-place and verandahs, the house is a typical pug and pine construction. Slabs of native pine were cut and erected side by side. Chicken wire was nailed to this framework and mud or pug was flushed to fill the gaps. The floor was rammed earth and the roof was corrugated galvanized iron sheets.

  1. 17.4.21 Great Spring Water, main water tank about half full. We found water all the walk to Wilpena Pound … see separate site comments.

  2. I passed this hut on April 23rd with Rover Scouts during the last day of hiking from where the trail crosses the Hawker-Parachilna Road to the Parachilna Gorge trailhead (7 days/125ish km.)

I think you will have difficulty camping in this hut for free – the national park charges bushwalkers $5 per person per night.

Also the hut is very open with no doors and open windows – very dusty, no protection from the wind and not a particularly nice place to sleep. It might be useful for cooking/sheltering in if it was bucketing down with rain, but it would have to be raining pretty hard for a long time before I’d sleep in there. If it’s fine I’d definitely prefer to sleep in a tent.
