Temporary closure of the Heysen Trail

Montacute Conservation Park – April 8th to April 14th, 2018

Walkers are advised of the upcoming temporary closure of the Montacute Conservation Park.

The Department for Environment and Water (formerly the Department of Environment, Water & Natural Resources, DEWNR) will be conducting a pest control program in the park and on adjoining private property.

Officers will be undertaking the operation between 6.00pm on Sunday April 8th and 6.00am on Saturday April 14th.

Walkers should note that the Conservation Park and adjoining private property will be closed during this period. As a result, there will be no public access to the sections of the Heysen and Mawson Trails within the park.

The Department will install signs giving advanced notice of the trail and park closures. There will also be signs informing the public when the park is closed during the operations.

Walk on the Heysen Trail and BBQ picnic

Walk for the Heysen – experience local parks and native scrub and have fun while supporting the Warren Bonython Heysen Trail Foundation’s 2018 fundraising efforts. The foundation supports the improvement of facilities and the environment on the Heysen Trail & other walking trails.

  • Four walk options from 5km to 17km.
  • Walks depart from 9.00 am. Arrive in time to register before your walk.
  • All walks depart from and arrive back to the Bridgewater Oval. Walks are designed to suit all ages and standards of walking fitness.
  • Bring the family for a great day out in the Adelaide Hills.

After the walk grab a BBQ meal (included in registration fee) at the Bridgewater Oval, or bring your own picnic. The picnic area includes the football club rooms, toilets and parking.

In keeping with the tradition of the Warren Bonython Memorial Walk conducted by the Friends of the Heysen Trail in 2013, the theme for the day will be yellow.
A prize consisting of a Heysen Trail merchandise pack (value $100) is up for grabs to the best yellow sartorial costuming on the day.

Bookings for End to End 13 are filling fast

Bookings for the first End to End 13 walk on Sunday May 6th 2018, are filling fast. If you want to join the group, now is the time to register.

End to End 13 is the 13th Friend’s group to walk the Heysen Trail. The group will set off from the Cape Jervis trailhead heading towards Parachilna Gorge.

Their first destination is Cobbler Hill in the Deep Creek Conservation Park. The trail for this walk follows sandy coastal tracks and exposed coastal hillsides, providing spectacular views over Backstairs Passage to Kangaroo Island.

As with previous groups the level of interest has been strong. After opening on Monday morning, the first bus was full by Tuesday.

We are now taking names of walkers wanting to join a second, smaller bus. While we still need more names to warrant the additional bus, we expect that, as in previous years, demand will be sufficient.

So act now, as there are limited spaces available.

31st AGM Friends of the Heysen Trail

will be held at 7.30pm on Friday, 23rd March 2018 at Thebarton Community Centre,

South Rd & Ashwin Parade, Torrensville SA 5031, Australia.

Nominations are sought from you, our members, for election to the Friends Council at the Annual General Meeting, for all positions including the Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and half of the remaining members (our Constitution calls for not less than four and not more than ten non-office bearing members). Nomination forms available in Autumn Trailwalker and at the office.
Council meetings are currently held on the third Wednesday of each month at 5.30pm, in a room adjacent to the Friends office in Epworth House, 33 Pirie Street. Meetings usually conclude by 7.30pm.
In addition to Council, there is an opportunity for members to contribute to one of the various Committees: Walking, Trails Maintenance, Marketing and Membership (inc. Trailwalker), Office and Greening etc.

Motion 1
That in paragraphs 12(1), 14(5) x3, 15(1) x2, Appendix 6(4), 8(4), 8(5)x2 and 8(6) to replace ‘Chairman’ with ‘Chair’ and 8(6) ‘Chairman’s’ to ‘chairs’

Motion 2
That in paragraph 7(3) and 16(3) “him” to “them” and in paragraph 8(6), 11(3), 14(3), 14(5) and in the Appendix to Constitution paragraphs 6(3), 8(3) and 8(5) “his” to “their”.

Motion 3
That in paragraph 10 remove “his or”.

Motion 4
That we change paragraph 15(1) to
“Minutes of all proceedings of General Meetings and of the Council and its committees and sub-committees shall be filed in electronic folders designated for minutes of Council, general meetings and each committee accordingly and authorised as a correct record by the Chair of that meeting or by the Chair of the next succeeding meeting.”
NB this then negates the need to change Chairman to Chair as above.

That we change Paragraph 15(3) to
“books containing the minutes of proceedings” to “electronic folders designated for minutes of proceedings”

Motion 6
That in Appendix to Constitution Paragraph 9 change to
“Minutes of all proceedings of General Meetings and of the Council and its committees and sub-committees shall be filed in books or electronic folders designated for minutes of Council, general meetings and each committee accordingly and authorised as a correct record by the Chair of that meeting or by the Chair of the next succeeding meeting.”

Guest Speaker Sean Benz Senior Ranger, Visitor Services.

Sean joined the Department when the State Government’s $10.4 million investment in upgrading metropolitan national parks was announced. He has since been involved in those upgrades, including the new trails and camping areas at Onkaparinga Gorge National Park, the new playground at Morialta Conservation Park and the new trails at Anstey Hill Recreation Park and will talk of The Park of the Month initiative.

Have they made an outstanding contribution to the Friends or to the Heysen Trail?

Now is the time for you to make sure their efforts are recognised.

You can nominate them for Honorary Membership of the Friends of the Heysen Trail & Other Walking Trails Inc.

Please email your nominations to Julian Monfries, Chair, Honorary Membership sub-committee of the Council.

In your nomination please include the following information:

  • The name of your nominee,
  • The classification of the award you are nominating them for,
  • A summary of their contribution to the Trail or the Friends and how they qualify for the award,
  • Your name and contact information

The sub-committee will consider all submissions and then make recommendations to Council. Succesful candidates will be presented to the full membership at the next Annual General Meeting to be held on 23rd March 2018.

Please submit your nominations by the end of January, 2018.

Guidelines for Honorary Membership (Distinguished Service)

  • normally at least 10 years of paid membership as an ordinary, Family or life member;

AND

  • at least 6 years of substantial voluntary contributions to the Association,
  • Including especially one or more of:
    • Membership of Council
    • Chair of the various sub-committees
    • Regular Walker Leadership roles
    • Maintenance Section Leader or Volunteer
    • Office Volunteer

Guidelines for Honorary Membership (Exceptional)

Substantial and sustained contribution to promotion, development and/or maintenance of the Heysen Trail, or the Association other than as a paid member or volunteer though, for example, public service support, media support etc.
