Walking the Simpson Desert

AUD $10.00

Crossing the Simpson Desert on foot was the sort of challenge that Warren bonython refused to back away from. Having successfully walked the Flinders Ranges from south to north in stages, he carefully investigated the suggestion of his walking companion, Charles McCubbin, to cross the Simpson pulling ‘something on wheels’ containing the necessary food and water.

The successful culmination of five years of thinking and planning is described in this book. Many surprises awaited the duo on their historic crossing of what was only decades ago largely unexplored and unknown desert. Situated mainly in the Northern Territory and overlapping into Queensland and South Australia, the desert is a series of sand-ridges about 400m apart, covering an area three-quarters the size of Victoria. It is a region of low rainfall with sparse vegetation, and contains probably the harshest terrain in Australia.

Central to the success of the expedition was the ‘Comalco Camel’, and aluminium trolley designed by Warren Bonython which was hauled by means of a harness attached to both Warren and Charles. The day-by-day discoveries, problems, and sheer physical effort as recorded by Warren enable the reader to visualise what they went through to accomplish this feat.
