SUMMARY:LFT4 Watervale\, Penworthham\, Clare
DESCRIPTION:Saturday;  From Mount Horrocks Road we head south then west into Watervale.  A pretty small town\, the area originally granted to a pioneer David Davies in 1847 by Governor Robe.  David Davies arrived in SA from Wales in 1840\, purchasing land in 1842 where Watervale  is located.  David Davies first born child (daughter) was the very first ‘white’ child to be born north of Gawler.  We cross Horrocks Hwy and head north on the Reisling Trail for 7kms to Penwortham\, settled by John Horrocks in 1839. A pretty section of the trail.  Once again\, no buses this weekend.  Car shuffle as ease of access and shorter distances between start & finish points of our hikes.\n\nDinner on Saturday night\,\n\nWe have booked the Sevenhill Hotel on Saturday 16/08 at 6.00pm for our final dinner.  Downstairs in the cellar.  Dress code: Dress to Impress.\n\nPlease RSVP to Kylie kylieg1414@yahoo.com.au\n\n \n\n\n\nSunday;   From Saw Mill Road we enter the Spring Gully CP.  Views to the west across the northern end of the Adelaide Plains.  The Spring Gully CP protects Red Stringybark trees\, White Spider Orchids and other plants in the grassy woodland ecosystem.  Back roads take us north through undulating farm land and vineyards into Clare.  Lovely views of the Clare Valley agriculture.  Once again\, no buses this weekend.  Car shuffle as ease of access and shorter distances between start & finish points of our hikes.\n\n\n\nWalk Difficulty – The Lavender Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines\, irregular surface with loose uneven\, slippery base. They have a walking time of about 5 to 7 hours and will require a good degree of physical fitness.\n\nBIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear\, clothing\, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds\, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

SUMMARY:LFT4 Scenic Road to Tothill Belt Road to Manora
DESCRIPTION:Saturday – Coming to this walk from the west side of the Bluff Ranges we continue north to Inspiration Point with lovely panoramas to the east and north. We pass a stand of Peppermint Cup Gums untouched since pre colonization.  A window back in time showing woodlands as they have been for millennia.  On to Peppermint Springs then to our familiar Web Gap and the Tothill Ranges. From Peppermint Springs we are hiking westerly toward Clare Valley.  The access points to these hikes are a little tricky so we are engaging bus services for this weekend.\n\nSunday – We head west to Moller Gap\, south to Quin Gap then west to Waterloo and on to Manoora. We are passing close to wind farm turbines. On our westerly march we traverse numerous ranges running north/south providing good views.  The access points to these hikes are a little tricky so we are engaging bus services for this weekend.\n\n \n\nWalk Difficulty – The Lavender Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines\, irregular surface with loose uneven\, slippery base. SUMMARY:LFT4 Smith Road to Eudunda to Schild Road
DESCRIPTION:Saturday; Around 20kms +\, we start in a westerly direction up in to the hills and then turning north\, crossing numerous creeks with undulations. We cross the Eudunda Road and out into some remote areas to the east.  We find ourselves crossing the Eudunda Road again and head north on some rolling hills and final inclines in to Eudunda.\n\nOur hike start and finish points are only about 11 kms along the main road\, south and north of Eudunda.  Quoted bus prices are expensive for such a short journey\, I thought it easier and cost effective to do a car shuffle for this weekends hikes.  We need to be at our meeting locations on time to allow organizing cars.  As there is no bus cost for this weekend\, you may consider a small donation to the Friends to compensate.\n\nSunday; Also close to 20kms +\, north with a steady incline out of Eudunda we follow the old train line that connected Morgan to Adelaide\, up over Hampden Spur followed by a steep ascent(100m) to Julia Road then north along Scenic Road\, now not often used but aptly named. Views from the hills are quite panoramic along here. From there we cut down to Schilds Road (steep decline).\n\nOur hike start and finish points are only about 11 kms along the main road\, south and north of Eudunda.  Quoted bus prices are expensive for such a short journey\, I thought it easier and cost effective to do a car shuffle for this weekends hikes.  We need to be at our meeting locations on time to allow organizing cars.  As there is no bus cost for this weekend\, you may consider a small donation to the Friends to compensate.\n\n \n\nWalk Difficulty – The Lavender Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines\, irregular surface with loose uneven\, slippery base. SUMMARY:Lavender Trail E2E4 Glen Turret Rd\, Dutton\, Smith Rd
DESCRIPTION:Sections of our hikes this weekend are in remote areas as we move  further north away from greener pastures.\n\nThese areas are very nice to hike through and shows well the variety of terrain the LT has to offer.\n\nIt is important to carry sufficient water and provisions this weekend and good footwear. We have two full days of varying terrain including a good climb (150mtrs elevation) on Sunday up Leake Lookout to give us great views to the East and the Murray flood plains and west over the South Mount Lofty Ranges.  We decent through wooded scrub following a wide creek showing large wombat burrows and more wooded areas.\n\n \n\n \n\nWalk Difficulty – The Lavender Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines\, irregular surface with loose uneven\, slippery base. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday we pass through beautiful areas with towering Eucalypts\, panoramic views and abundant wildlife. First dairies in the district dated from 1840s supplying cheese to the Victorian Goldfields. Later in the day we see shearing shed built in 1841 and still in use.\n\n \n\nOn Sunday\, if there has been rain\, we may have inundated areas to negotiate.  Shelter is sparse but rocky outcrops and panoramas south to Mt Beevor (still fresh in our minds!). We pass by St Magnus Homestead whose occupants  included Kym Bonython.  Sheep grazing\, stands of eucalypt plantations gradually give way to grape vines in this district.\n\nContact mobile numbers for the leaders are;\n\nStephen Salib-Brown  0415 755374\n\nKylie Gibbons  0417 851409\n\nGillian Stevens  0424 752953\n\nI recommend you save these numbers in your phones.\n\n \n\nWalk Difficulty – The Lavender Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines\, irregular surface with loose uneven\, slippery base. SUMMARY:Lavender Trail E2E4 Weekend Walks May2024
DESCRIPTION:To start with a walk along the Murray where we may see The Murray Princess moored\, around reclaimed wetlands then off to the scrub. Pass by Mobilong Low security prison and the perimeter of Monarto Zoo. A great start to a new hiking season. A day with great variety in terrain and introduction to Lavender Trail stiles!\n\nWalk Difficulty – The Lavender Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines\, irregular surface with loose uneven\, slippery base. They have a walking time of about 5 to 7 hours and will require a good degree of physical fitness.\n\nPlease ensure you are wearing appropriate clothing for bush walking including sturdy footwear\, wide brimmed hat & sunblock\, all weather jacket. Carry a small 1st aid kit\, at least 2lt of water plus some electrolytes and snacks of some nutritional worth for our breaks such as morning tea\, lunch and afternoon\, if necessary. There may not be mobile phone coverage along all the trail.  Walking sticks can be most useful for steep hills up or down and are recommended even if not used throughout the entire day.\n\nWe will be walking in a group fashion as much as possible\, so hikers with a spring in their step will need to pay attention to those behind and not disappear in to the distance. The old rule of  being able to ‘sight the walker behind you’!  For the slower walkers\, please do not feel pressured to walk faster than your capacity as we are here to enjoy the day\, but remember we are on a hike not a dawdle! There is always time for snapping quick photos on the trail.\n\nThere are a number of stiles on the trail which slow the group progress so please do not loiter at these spots for too long. Use these opportunities to adjust gear\, have a drink and a chat before continuing on the trail.\n\nIf Trail Makers are missing or direction is unclear or trail makes a sudden change in direction\, please STOP and wait for leaders to determine what action is needed. The direction of the path may be apparent but this is not always the case.\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nBIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear\, clothing\, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds\, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

SUMMARY:M.Bridge- Monarto
DESCRIPTION:This is the first walk of the 325km Lavender Trail from Murray Bridge to Clare. Beginning in Murray Bridge\, this relatively flat section of the trail meanders along the Murray River for a short distance past wetlands and then into Rocky Gully Reserve. We get a glimpse of Mobilong Prison and pass Monato Zoo so there are opportunities for recalcitrant walkers to leave the trail at these points!\nOn the first walk of the Lavender Federation Trail a representative of SARTI (South Australian Recreation Trails Incorporated)\, the developers of the trail\, will give a brief outline of the history of the trail’s design and construction before we set out for the day. We also encourage walkers to join SARTI (it’s only $10) to support their maintenance of the trail ((https://lavenderfederationtrail.org.au/membership/ ).  Maps of the trail are available from the Heysen office.

DESCRIPTION:Continuing north on Scenic Road we come to Inspiration Point Lookout with great views.\n\nWe move down and on through Peppermint Springs Station.\n\nJust beyond we pass a patch of preserved Peppermint Box Gums with the shrub and ground layers still in tack as has been for many centuries. We come across two quality information boards for the LFT & HT and then it is up and over Webb Gap.\n\nI have arranged with the bus company that weather and conditions permitting\, we will approach Bluff Range from the west reaching Scenic Road near where we turned off from it last month before the decent to our cars. This will save the climb back up to Scenic Road which we would have to do otherwise.
