SUMMARY:Hiking Expo walk into expo: Cemetery\, Barr St Mitcham to Gums Oval
DESCRIPTION:This is one of two hikes that the Friends of the Heysen Trail are guiding from further afield into the Hiking Expo in Belair National Park. \nStarting from the cemetery at Mitcham\, walking up through the foothills and quiet gullies of Randall Park and through the quiet back streets of Belair. From Belair train station\, the walk will enter the National Park passing through majestic endangered ecosystem of grey box woodland. \nThe hike is along walking trails and some roads. The hike is one-way and you will need to make your own arrangements to return home after the walk reaches the Expo site. You could organise a group car shuffle with friends (leave a car at each end)\, or you could arrange to have family or friends meet you at Gums Oval and take you back. You could also use public transport\, walking to a bus stop or Belair train station. There will most probably a 10 seat shuttle bus available to take you back to the start for a small fare.

SUMMARY:Hallet Cove Conservation Park and surrounds
DESCRIPTION:This walk will center on exploring the Hallet Cove Conservation Park which is a geological wonder and first attracted the attention of scientists in 1877. \nThere is a wave cut rock platform of folded ancient rock\, a deeply scratched glaciated pavement and many examples of rocks and boulders that have been dropped by the glacier that was here in the last ice age. Aborigines also lived here during the last ice age! We can view the wave cut platform from the clifftop level and we will also descend to sea level using an open tread staircase\, weather permitting. The craggy cliffs and wild rocky beach are worth seeing. If open tread stairs terrify you you can stay on top and admire the views while we explore. \nThe coastal scrub is of interest too as many of the plants grow in the Flinders Ranges and can be seen along the northern Heysen Trail. \nThere are plenty of things to explore nearby such as wetlands\, a river mouth\, a lake\, cliff top walk and a grassy foreshore which has recently been graced with a war memorial to commemorate the Anzacs at Gallipoli Cove. \nExpect some hills and rough ground. \nBring snacks for morning tea\, water and sunscreen. \nThe BoatShed Cafe serves great coffee and pizza if you are tempted to stay for lunch. \nRecommend good walking shoes and wind protection jacket. \nWalk start 930am expected finish 1230pm.
