SUMMARY:Lobethal Bushland Pk
DESCRIPTION:Pleasant circular walk in Lobethal Bushland Park just outside of Lobethal. The trails in the park were through heritage-listed bush but the park was burnt out in the December 2019 Adelaide Hills bush fire. Through the care of passionate volunteers\, the park has been remarked and is showing signs of incredible regrowth. There are also exciting signs that kangaroos\, echidnas and bird life are returning. We will walk through trails which have been burnt\, but there are wonderful signs of regrowth on some of the trees and also the undergrowth. Slopes are mostly gradual. A good walk for new walkers and families\, with toilets and a picnic/bbq area at walk completion.

SUMMARY:Mt Barker
DESCRIPTION:Commencing from Laratinga Wetlands on Mount Barker Creek we will be walking to the Summit of Mount Barker. There\, on a clear day\, we have views south-east over the Murray’s Lower Lakes and to the west over the Onkaparinga Valley to Mount Lofty. Track is along the verge of some minor country roads until we reach the Conservation Reserve where the path is through open woodland. Here the understory is low shrubs and we should see native orchids and a variety of bulbous plants in flower.

SUMMARY:Adelaide Parklands South
DESCRIPTION:The Adelaide Park Lands Trail is a series of connected walking and cycling trails that loop through or are adjacent to 27 parks and other historical locations within central Adelaide and North Adelaide. Using the River Torrens as a bisector allows the trail to be divided into a Southern Loop and a Northern Loop\, which allows for more manageable walking distances over 2 days. \nThis walk will complete the Southern Loop of the trail (16km). The walk to complete the Northern Loop (9km) will take place on Sunday\, 31st October 2021 (refer to the Walk Calendar to register separately for the Northern Loop event). \nWhile city walking on a variety of flat bitumen\, paved and unsealed paths will not appeal to everyone\, these two events provide a great opportunity to walk a full loop of Adelaide while enjoying the park lands and other historical locations that make it such a unique city. \nWhile this is not a difficult walk\, it’s a long walk so wear appropriate clothing and footwear and carry sufficient water for the conditions on the day. Bring snacks / lunch to have at a couple of breaks along the way.

SUMMARY:Mark Oliphant Conservation Park
DESCRIPTION:We will hike the Mark Oliphant Conservation Park for a distance of approx. 12 kms of undulating native scrub. Including a morning tea break\, we should finish in about 3  – 3½ hours. \nI think this is a hidden gem.  Not a park that is used very much and so nice and quiet (at this stage).  There is work being undertaken at the main entrance to the park to accommodate more parking as sections of this park are included in the Adelaide 100 Trail.  We will hike around the work being undertaken and check out how far along they are. \nWe will walk past a waterfall (one of the typical SA waterfalls shown on the map that I have never seen any water in) however as we are hiking this area in July\, you never know! \nIf you have time you are more than welcome to join me after the hike at Red Cacao\, Unit 3/41 Mount Barker Rd\, Stirling SA 5152 for a coffee/hot chocolate or whatever you prefer.  There is parking at the back of the café\, turn onto Pomona Road and then right at the big P for parking sign. \nWe meet at 8.15am for an 8.30am start. \nDon’t forget to check the weather and wear appropriate clothing.  Check out the Friends of the Heysen website for what to bring for day hikes. \n  \nBIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear\, clothing\, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds\, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

SUMMARY:Waitpinga
DESCRIPTION:A harder Trail Starter due to rocky undulating and slippery track. \nFollowing the Heysen Trail we reach the rugged cliffs of the Newland Head Conservation Park where with weather permitting there is spectacular views along the coast line. Whales and dolphins have been seen from here. The rocky undulating track winds through coastal vegetation\, down into valleys and back up to view the sea again. \nLeaving the coast behind we walk inland with wide open views of farm land on the right and bush to the left. A sharp turn takes us into the bush where we should see many flowering wildflowers and maybe some orchids. Time will be given to enjoy this pretty area. \nLeaving the bush behind we will see the sea again before arriving back at our cars. \n  \nIf the weather is bad on the day the walk will not go to the coast\, it will stay inland and be around 7km.

SUMMARY:Horsnell Gully /Giles CP (Grade 3)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This is not an easy Trail Starter Hike.  Read below for all details before you book on this hike. \nWe will hike into Horsnell Gully and Giles Conservation Park to explore the Giles Ruins and look out for koalas along the way.  This is an out and back hike of 9km.  We will follow part of the Heysen Trail. \nMeet at 8.15am for briefing\, 8.30am start. \nThis is classified as a Grade 3\, Moderate hike. According to the walking track grading system\, this means it is suitable for most ages and fitness levels.  Tracks may have short steep hill sections\, a rough surface and many steps. \nOn this hike there are 2 major up sections\, along with 2 major down sections as well as some undulations\, a small creek crossing (no wet feet though)\, some fire track sections and narrow rocky path sections. \nWe should complete the hike in 3 1/2 to 4 hours.  Including time for morning tea at the Giles Ruins. Bring something to eat and drink for your morning tea. No facilities are accessible on this hike. \nAs we will be hiking in the first week of Spring\, the weather can be unpredictable so please be prepared for anything\, including warmer weather.  Always bring with you at least 2-3 litres of water\, there is no access to water during this hike. \nPotential hazards: Snakes are more active during Spring\, hence a good idea to have in your first aid kit a compression bandage/snake bandage.  Warm weather – bring plenty of water\, wear a sun hat\, sunscreen and clothing layers so you can cool down as needed.                                                Slippery/Rocky paths – be careful with your footing and wear appropriate shoes to ensure good grip. \nGroup Hiking etiquette – we hike single file when on a narrow trail in order to be careful of the delicate flora that often borders trails\, we try to designate a “tail ender” who stays at the back of the group in order to make sure nobody gets lost or hurt without anyone knowing\, we may have to slow down or speed up to create a median speed that is bearable for everyone\, we adhere to “leave no trace” principles (take out what you bring in\, including toilet paper)\, be courteous of others\, do not go ahead of the nominated leader\, be aware of who is hiking in front of and behind you\, if you cannot see anyone behind you\, stop and wait for them to catch up\, this ensures everyone is within sight of each other.
