SUMMARY:A Day on the Heysen Trail: the Warren Bonython Memorial Walk
DESCRIPTION:Warren Bonython AO\, died in April of this year. He was a great believer in challenging himself in the outdoors: walking the Simpson Desert\, walking Lake Eyre and walking the length of the Flinders Ranges.\n\nHis exploits inspired generations of bushwalkers and the walking community of South Australia plans to honour his memory with our own challenge – walking the entire length of the Heysen Trail on the one day. The October Long Weekend\, Sunday 6th 2013\, has been chosen as the Day on the Heysen Trail: the Warren Bonython Memorial Walk.\n\nThe trail will be divided into 60 sections\, between 16 and 30km long\, with experienced leaders from South Australia’s bushwalking community. Participants will be able to book directly on to a section via the Friends of Heysen Trail web site\, from May 2013.\n\nMore details will be made available in 2013.\n\nThe walk will be open to all bushwalkers\, and schools with outdoor programs. The first step is to appoint leaders for each section. One organiser for each section will be responsible for the participants on their walk\, booking any buses if required and dealing with local logistics. The coordinating committee will provide detailed notes and instructions to help each section organiser.\n\nUPDATE 15/11/12: Extra walk leaders will be needed in a ratio of one walk leader for each 15 participants on the day. So if the walking community of South Australia is to meet this challenge in true Bonython style we need all of our experienced walkers and organisers to put up their hands. The Heysen Office is collecting a list of interested walk leaders and walking groups\, preferably with email addresses for future information. A list of the 60 sections will be circulated and leaders allocated in the next few months.

SUMMARY:The Real Chambers Gully
DESCRIPTION:Hello\, Afficionados of the hard slog! In keeping with my previous challenging walks\, I offer for tasting\, a sample of harder tracks within Chambers Gully and its surrounds in the Cleland Conservation Park. To ensure that our thigh muscles are well lubricated\, we will start this walk by avoiding the Sunday\, Lycra clad crowds and their cars that descend upon Waterfall Gully Road. By the time we enter Chambers Gully\, no hill will be too daunting for our group. As this is Springtime\, the normally greyish green native flora will for a change look slightly more colourful. Well worn footwear recommended + about 2 litres of water.\n\nIf your question is\, “I walk regularly with my dog\, along the beach in Glenelg. Would I be able to do this walk?”\n\nThe answer would be\, “Absolutely not! Leave your dog at home.”

SUMMARY:Mt George
DESCRIPTION:A beautiful introductory walk for beginners of bush walking. The walk will commence along the Heysen Trail past the Bridgewater historic water-wheel mill. The trail will then take us off the Heysen Trail into Mt George conservation Park to the summit of Mt George. This can be a popular destination for bushwalkers and birdwatchers. Mount George Conservation Park landscape ranges from wetlands to open forests with rocky outcrops. The park features a great variety of vegetation and spring flowers. In the park you will find pea flowers\, ground-hugging correas and a variety of delightful native orchids. Wedge-tailed eagles may be seen circling the skies above the park\, while superb blue wrens\, red-browed finches\, white-throated treecreepers and scarlet robins are often observed around the trees and shrubs. You may often see koala’s fast asleep in the Gums and you often hear Kookaburra’s having a laugh as we walk past.\n\nAt the summit we will take a morning Tea break whilst we enjoy the scenery. Then we will desend down to the Heysen Trail back upon our return to Bridgewater. For those interested a quick refreshment or lunch is at the Bridgewater Inn.

SUMMARY:Sea-to-Summit Trail (Mt Lofty Half)
DESCRIPTION:This is a beautiful walk that takes in the entire length of Belair National Park before heading up along Waverley Ridge to Crafers. We then cross over the South Eastern Freeway to wind our way up to the Mt Lofty Summit using Cleland Conservation Park. There is 3kms of road walking to be done and all walkers will need to have a moderate level of fitness. Afterwards\, those who wish can join me for a well earned ale or wine (and/or lunch) at the Crafers Hotel.

SUMMARY:Para Wirra
DESCRIPTION:This should be a lovely walk thru native scrub in wild flower season. it shouldn’t be too challenging for reasonably fit walkers but there are lots of undulating tracks and fire trails to negotiate.\n\nI will be concentrating more on the southern section of the park\, rather than the more frequented Barossa Goldfields area

SUMMARY:Tanunda to Kapunda
DESCRIPTION:This walk takes us along back road reserves past vineyards and wineries of the Barossa Valley\, through the small town of Greenock and into the cropping and grazing land of the lower north. It is a long but mainly flat walk with only a few undulations. Pleasant vistas and changing seasonal colours make this a pretty walk.

SUMMARY:Waitpinga to Tugwell Road
DESCRIPTION:One of the most spectacular sections of the Trail\, walkers follow sandy tracks through the coastal scrub of Newland Head Conservation Park\, and dramatic clifftops towards Victor Harbor. Here whales have been sighted\, as well as seals\, dolphins and the endangered white bellied sea eagle. At Kings Beach the Trail leaves the coast following roads and an uncleared road reserve to Tugwell Road to begin the long journey north. A bus will be used at the start and end of the day\, hence the higher bus fee.
