The walk commences from the oldest timber plantation in the Mount Lofty Ranges, planted in 1898, and meanders through a very small section of Kuitpo Forest. Walking mainly on open tracks the landscape will be a mixture of forest, native vegetation and farmland.

The Friends of the Heysen Trail is the primary partner in maintaining the Heysen Trail. A regular walking program occurs year-wide, with different grades of walks catering for beginners to experienced walkers.
