Dutchman’s Stern to Old Wonoka

Walking from Dutchmans Stern to Leigh Creek Road (Old Wonoka) on the Heysen Trail.

What to expect

IMPORTANT NOTE

This is a multi-day walk. Registration requires payment of the END TO END EXTENDED WALK FEE. This fee assumes that registrants have purchased a Golden Boots card (see https://heysentrail.asn.au/walks/faq-frequently-asked-questions/#cost ). Accommodation and meal costs are not included. Those registering are invited to travel on the bus, at no extra cost, from Adelaide to Pt. Augusta, then Hawker, and return to Adelaide. If you choose to drive your own vehicle to the base locations (Pt Augusta and Hawker) the bus fee remains the same. Please note that there are no other fee options for this multi-day event. Accommodation and meal arrangements are the responsibility of each person registering. Group meals are planned for Tuesday 2 June (byo BBQ) and Sunday 7 June (hotel).

If you are unable to walk for the specified 6 walk days comprising this multi-day event and you still wish to register, contact the Friends’ office during operating hours.

BASE LOCATION: 1 – 4 JUNE (WALKS 1, 2, & 3)

Port Augusta (Big 4 Holiday Park)

TUESDAY 2 JUNE (WALK 1)

This is a deceptively tough walk with a bit of everything – undulating fire tracks with spectacular views, a rocky gorge and a gibber strewn floodplain.

WEDNESDAY 3 JUNE (WALK 2)

After climbing back into the range, walkers enter Mount Arden Creek which winds its way northwards. The gradual climb up the winding creek bed with its waterfalls and rocky sections can make progress very slow.

THURSDAY 4 JUNE (WALK 3)

After Mt Arden South campsite the trail leaves the creek to climb Mt Arden summit for spectacular 360 degree views. The trail then follows the ridge line and a pretty creek line to exit at Buckaringa Gorge.

FRIDAY 5 JUNE RELOCATE BASE TO HAWKER (NO WALKING)

BASE LOCATION: 5 – 8 JUNE (WALKS 4, 5, & 6)

Hawker

SATURDAY 6 JUNE (WALK 4)

This is a predominantly flat walk below rocky outcrops. The trail then leads across Willochra Plain to Partacoona Station.

SUNDAY 7 JUNE (WALK 5)

This is a long but fairly fast walk, initially along vehicle tracks, then over open grazing land along the face of Yappala Range and past the historic Mt Elm school site to Jarvis Hill carpark.

MONDAY 8 JUNE (WALK 6 and RETURN TO ADELAIDE)

One of the gems of the Trail, this ridge walk provides spectacular views and many photo opportunities. It is a short walk, but may still take up to 4 hours because of the terrain and photo stops.

THEME

On Thursday we climb Mt Arden, named after Matthew Flinders’ great-grandmother. See The Life of Capt Matthew Flinders R.N. (Appendix C) at http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks/e00065.html

The theme is, therefore, the letter A.

Walk difficulty: End-to-End 5

These walks are for those wishing to walk some or all of the Heysen Trail. There are approximately sixty day walks involved, spread over six years. The southern walks, from Cape Jervis to Kapunda, are held on one Sunday per month during the walk season. Due to the greater travelling distances involved, from Kapunda northwards, the walk is held over a weekend.

These arrangements make it easy to walk the entire trail because the Friends of Heysen Trail work out many of the logistics.

These walks are reasonably demanding and for walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain. They have a walking time of about 5 to 6 hours and will require a high degree of physical fitness.

Refer to the End-to-End Walks page for more detailed information.

Registration terms and conditions

All walks are subject to you wearing appropriate clothing. Prime considerations are warmth and weather protection. Your safety and the safety of the walking group can be jeopardised by you wearing inappropriate clothing. In an emergency situation it can take hours to evacuate a sick or injured walker. Leaders may not accept people for a walk who have not come appropriately dressed or prepared.

View details of appropriate clothing at https://heysentrail.asn.au/walking-the-heysen-trail/prepare-to-walk-the-trail/what-to-wear-and-bring/

In the event of hot weather, the decision to proceed with or cancel a walk is made by the Walk Leader(s), having regard to risk factors such as local weather conditions, trail accessibility, vehicle support, and the physical capabilities of walkers in the group. In some circumstances, the Walk Leader may decide to amend, modify or shorten a scheduled walk. If a single-day End-to-End walk is cancelled, walk fees will be refunded. Refunds do not apply to weekend-away walks and multi-day events.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
