Description

The first of our final two weeks on the Heysen Trail starting at Eyre Depot  trekking through to the walkout from the trail to Mt Little Station. Six days of memorable walking with highlights including the gradual climb through the range and walk along the creek line from Eyre Depot, the climb up and over Mt Arden with its panoramic vistas, traverse of Buckaringa Gorge and the spectacular views from Jarvis Hill (truly one of the  "wow" moments on the trail).

This is a multi-day walk. Registration requires payment of the FULL BUS FEE ( assumes all walkers have a Golden Boots card). Accommodation and meal costs are not included.

Accommodation will be at Quorn from Saturday June 4 to Wednesday June 8 (check-out), transferring to Hawker on that day and at Hawker until Sunday June 12.

Those registering are invited to travel on the bus, at no extra cost, from Adelaide to Quorn, then Hawker and return to Adelaide. If you intend to travel on the bus from and to Adelaide PLEASE ADVISE in the COMMENTS SECTION when Registering.

The Bus is capable of taking up to 20 passengers and luggage. So be early to indicate your interest.

Those traveling by Bus are asked to pack all clothing, food etc into suit cases, eskies, cardboard boxes or plastic containers, to ensure that luggage can be stacked on top of one-another without fear of it being squashed

If you choose to drive your own vehicle to Quorn & Hawker, you are still required to pay the Bus Fee. Please note there are no other Fee options for this event.

Group meals are planned for Tuesday June 7 and Saturday June 11.

An EARLY REGISTRATION LINK will offered to all regular End 2 End 11 walkers on Wednesday 13th April, three weeks prior to public opening of registration for the event.

Please Note: Upon registering you will be advised of THREE TRAINING walks you may like to join as preparation for our week of walking in June. There is no fee for these walks.
Information about the Training walks will be included in the Meeting Location section of the Registration Confirmation email for the Eyre Depot to Mt Little walk.

Meal details

Dinner at Emily’s Bistro on Tuesday 7th June at 6.30pm. The cost for dinner will again be $25.00 per head which includes a damper and a Roast. Deserts, Coffee and  Alcohol to be purchased at your own expense. Please pay for your meal upon arrival as was the case last year. Book for this meal in the normal manner when registering.

On Saturday 11th June there will be a dinner at the Hawker Hotel at 6.00- 6.30pm, to celebrate the conclusion of the 1st week of walking. If you wish to attend this dinner please advise in the COMMENTS SECTION when Registering. We will be seated in a separate dining area and payment is to made upon ordering your meal. A copy of the menu will be distributed a few days prior to enable us to place the groups order in advance of the evening.

Walking from
Eyre Depot. After a 1.5 klms walk-in to rejoin the trail at the Eyre Depot monument, walkers follow a track to head back into the range before entering Depot Creek which winds its way northwards. The gradual climb up the creek bed with its waterfalls and rocky sections can make for slow progress and walkers need to pay close attention to their foot placement. We leave the triail at Peter's Corner for the walk-out to Warren Gorge.

Hazards

Some tricky rocky areas along and above the creek bed with a short sharp climb and descent around a waterfall.

Good quality footwear (is essential ) & clothing, raincoat, hat, sunscreen, walking poles, morning tea, lunch and at least 2-3 litres of water. There no exit points on this walk.

Walking from
Warren Gorge. From Warren Gorge walkers follow the creek west along the spur trail to rejoin the trail at Peter's corner then head north towards the climb up to the summit of Mt Arden with its spectactular 360 degree views. The trail then follows a roller coaster journey along the main ridgeline before descending into a pretty but rugged creek to exit at Buckaringa Gorge.

Buckaringa Gorge. On the walk through creek out to the gorge walkers will encounter a number of very tricky scrambles over and around rocky outcrops.

17 klms plus a walk in of 4.9 klms to rejoin the trail.

Hazards

An undulating and hilly walk some testing rocky scrambles.

Requirements

Good quality footwear is absolutely essential. Walking poles are also highly recommended.

Buckaringa Gorge. A predominantly flat walk below rocky outcrops and after crossing Willochra Creek onto the Willochra then passing Partacoona Station brfore a few kilomters of road walking to the end.

The creek crossing can be tricky and slippery after rains.

Calabrinda Creek. This is a long but fairly fast walk, initially along vehicle tracks, then over open grazing land along the face of Yappala Range before heading east through light scrub past the historic Mt Elm schoolsite and on to the final climb to Jarvis Hill carpark.

Hazards

The section below Yappala Range can be messy to walk along as it is sloped and often stony underfoot. Generally a lot of discarded fence wire on or adjacent to the trail, often hidden amongst the ground cover.

Walking from
Jarvis Hill carpark Though only a short walk it is truly one of the gems and one to be savoured. From the carpark walkers climb up onto the ridge line providing for spectactular views and many magnificent photo opportunities. An at times tricky descent leads into a section of native scrub then a flat 4 klm walk along a fenceline to the Leigh Creek Road.

The descent from the ridge line can be slippery and walkers need to take particularly when moving across some of the large areas of flat rock..

Walking from
Leigh Creek Road. A classic Fiinders Ranges creek walk spending the entire day in Wonoka Creek which has been the site of many major floods. After passing Mayo Hut walkers leave the trail at Mernmerna Creek for a short clamber through Mayo Gorge on to the Mt Little Station campground for the conclusion of the weeks walking.
