This page will be used to list temporary closures of the trail.

Not listed here will be closures that occur each fire danger season.

Also not listed here will be closures due to forestry operations – they generally involve short, temporary re-routes of the trail rather than closures.

Parsons Beach & Waitpinga Beach – Section 4 – OPEN

As of 10/4 National Parks have announced that Wait­pin­ga and Par­sons beach are open.

The threats posed by microal­gal blooms does however remain…
SA Health advis­es beach vis­i­tors to:
* Avoid swim­ming and surf­ing in dis­coloured water and foam.
* Wash in clean water if you come into con­tact with dis­coloured water.

Wild South Coast Way – Sections 1-5 – May 2025

Var­i­ous Parks on the Fleurieu Penin­su­la includ­ing Deep Creek Nation­al Park will be ful­ly closed for a fer­al ani­mal con­trol pro­gram from noon Sun­day 18 May 2025 — noon Fri­day 23 May 2025.

The Wild South Coast Way on the Heysen Trail will be closed (except the Newland Head Conservation Park and Natunyuru Ngawanthi/Sand Dunes Campground)

Northern Adelaide Hills – Sections 15-18 – June 2025

An aerial cull of feral deer is planned for two weeks starting Monday 2 June 2025, but will not run over the weekends or the public holiday.

Section 18 – Monday 2 June to Friday 6 June – Shooting over Pewsey Vale zone and Mt Gawler/Old Kersbrook/Para Wirra/South Para.
Rossiter’s Hut Heysen Trail  (Pewsey) will need to be closed for public access. Trail at Pewsey Vale / Kaiserstuhl will have closure signage.

Sections 15-17 – Tuesday 10 June to Friday 13 June – Shooting over eastern side of Mt Crawford – campsites to consider: Chalks, Rocky Paddock, Cromer Shed, Fromm’s Farm, Old Schoolhouse, Ponderosa, Old Schoolhouse, Centennial Drive and Scott’s Heysen Trail hut. Closure signage will be erected at all public land gates in this area, including at points along the Heysen Trail.

Campsite & event bookings will be blocked for the dates above. Any bookings already in place will be managed through communication with option to change dates or cancel and get refund.

Wapma Thura – Southern Flinders Ranges NP – Sections 39 & 40 – November 2025.

The Wapma Thura – Southern Flinders Ranges National Park will be closed for a pest control program from 6am Monday 28th April 2025 until 6pm Friday, 2nd May 2025.

A closure is also planned from 6am, 3 November to 6pm, 7 November 2025.

The area closed includes Bluff Lookout, Telowie Gorge, Nelshaby Gorge and Napperby Gorge.

Mount Remarkable National Park – Sections 43 & 44 – Open from April 17

The Heysen Trail will re-open from 17 April.

Walkers should exercise caution as the burnt areas may be slippery, damaged trees in spots and the Trail is harder to locate visually.

Thru-hikers note that Stony Creek walk-in site infrastructure was damaged so there is currently no water or camping – please stay and resupply in Wilmington.

The Mount Brown Conservation Park will be closed for a pest control program from 6am 8 November to 2pm 14 November 2025.

Dutchmans Stern CP – Sections 48 & 49 – November 2025

The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park will be closed for a pest control program from 6am 8 November to 2pm 14 November 2025.

Buckaringa – Sections 51 & 52 – May, July & September/October

The Australian Wildlife Conservancy conducts regular programs to control feral animals in the Buckaringa Sanctuary.

When these take place the section of the Heysen Trail passing through the sanctuary is closed.

The first closures for the year will be from evening of Wednesday 21st May 2025 to evening Sunday 25th May 2025 inclusive.
Further closures are planned for short periods of time in late July 2025 and in late September/early October 2025.

To bypass the closure south-bound walkers should leave the trail just after the Buckaringa North campsite to follow the Buckaringa Scenic Drive south to join the Arden Vale Road … and to rejoin the trail via Warren Gorge.
