Horrocks Pass to Alligator Gorge to Melrose

Walking from Melrose to Horrocks Pass on the Heysen Trail.

What to expect

This is the first of the ‘normal’ type of End-to-End weekend walk for E2E-1 where we will use a bus to only ferry us from the finish point to the start point each morning. But this weekend wont be ‘normal’!

The theme for the weekend is “RITUALS”.

Saturday, our first day, we will skip forward a section to walk from Alligator Gorge Road to Melrose. Although very picturesque, this is a long, tough walk with lots of ups and downs and a big mix of terrain finishing with a long steady descent from Mt.Remarkable. We will start early (7:30am) and finish late. Being the day after the Winter Solstice we will have the minimum of daylight, so please bring a torch.

Sunday, we walk from Horrocks Pass to Alligator Gorge Road, a relatively short and easy walk, but includes some busy bitumen roads and ends just after the ritual ‘Lavender Peak’ cairn building. NOTE: There will be an afternoon bus pick up to ferry us back from Alligator Gorge Road to the cars we left at the Horrocks Memorial at the beginning of the day’s walk.

Walk difficulty: End-to-End Minus 1

These walks are for those wishing to walk some or all of the Heysen Trail. There are approximately sixty day walks involved, spread over six years. The southern walks, from Cape Jervis to Kapunda, are held on one Sunday per month during the walk season. Due to the greater travelling distances involved, from Kapunda northwards, the walk is held over a weekend.

These arrangements make it easy to walk the entire trail because the Friends of Heysen Trail work out many of the logistics.

These walks are reasonably demanding and for walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain. They have a walking time of about 5 to 6 hours and will require a high degree of physical fitness.

Refer to the End-to-End Walks page for more detailed information.
