Introduction Walk for End to End 17- Belair National Park

This event has passed.

What to expect

This is our first of two training walks that are planned to mimic conditions on the Heysen Trail, and will give you an indication of your fitness levels and also allow you test your hiking equipment.

It will also give you an opportunity to meet with the Leaders and discuss any queries you may have about your Heysen journey ahead.

Starting from the National Park entrance gates adjacent the eastern side of Belair Lodge on Sheoak Rd, we cut across to the Lodge track and walk east to the rail crossing before joining onto the Yurrebilla trail. We will make our way to the Waterfall Hike trail and onto the Upper Waterfall. We will continue east along Queens Jubilee Drive, until turning south and making our way to the Plantation and onto Melville Gully Road, arriving at Long Gully Pavillion. Climbing up Kaloola Track we will head northwest along the Warri Parri Ridge Track re-joining the Adventure Loop Trail until reaching the Lorikeet Loop, and into the Adventure Playground. Walking north up the Lorikeet Loop Walk past Old Government House, we will connect back onto Yurrebilla Trail and progress westwards towards Playford Lake, then northwards back to Sheoak Road and the cars.

A 15min morning tea & half hour lunch break will be had at a suitable location, depending upon weather.

This walk is moderately gentle introduction to what to expect on the Heysen Trail, and has several short ascents & descents, some steeper than others. It is planned to replicate the terrain you will encounter along the first section of the Heysen Trail from Cape Jervis.

We hope you are able to undertake the second training walk in Cleland on the 30th April, and any other additional walks in the mean time.

The greater your level of walk fitness, will result in a more enjoyable trail experience.

These walks are for those wishing to walk some or all of the Heysen Trail. There are approximately sixtyone day walks involved, spread over six years. The southern walks, from Cape Jervis to Kapunda, are held on one Sunday per month during the walk season. Due to the greater travelling distances involved, from Kapunda northwards, the walk is held over a weekend.

These arrangements make it easy to walk the entire trail because the Friends of Heysen Trail work out many of the logistics.

These walks are reasonably demanding and for walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain. They have a walking time of about 5 to 6 hours and will require a high degree of physical fitness.

Some mud tracks slippery if wet, loose & unstable surfaces in parts. Cyclists, trains at crossing.

Registration terms and conditions

All walks are subject to you wearing appropriate clothing. Prime considerations are warmth and weather protection. Your safety and the safety of the walking group can be jeopardised by you wearing inappropriate clothing. In an emergency situation it can take hours to evacuate a sick or injured walker. If the forecast temperature for Adelaide is equal or higher than 32C, walks are cancelled. For simplicity, this can be determined the night prior to the walk from the 7.00 pm ABC News Adelaide weather forecast, based upon the Bureau of Meteorology’s routine 4pm forecast.

Your Walk Leader will send an email to all walkers advising the walk is cancelled. We suggest you check your emails before leaving to join the walk. Even if the forecast temperature is later revised, the walk remains cancelled. In such a case walk fees will be refunded.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
