Village in City – Walk the SE corner of Adelaide

What to expect

In the late 19th Century, people from all social levels

lived in the south eastern corner of the city. The wealthy

occupied mansions on East and South Terrace, the growing

middle class lived in Victorian villas in Halifax and Gilles

Streets, while the intervening small cottages were filled by

workers who were able to walk to work or work from home.

Pastoralists, government workers, publicans, policemen and

plasterers all lived in close proximity. However in the 1920s

and 1930s it became fashionable to move to the suburbs

on the other side of the south and east Park Lands.

Meal to follow for those so entices at the General Havelock

Walk difficulty: Summer Walks

These walks are only for when it is not walk season. The walks are generally 1.5 to 2 hours mostly on Wednesday evenings, meeting at 6pm, followed by a meal, close to Adelaide. With increasing popularity of walks some may be in the morning with variable meeting times and longer than the evening walks.

These walks are for those who

  • wish to maintain their fitness outside the walking season,
  • may not be regular walkers,
  • have not walked in a group previously, or
  • want a shorter walk.

Anyone undertaking these walks may have only a modest degree of physical fitness. However read the walk description as some walks may be longer and more strenuous than others.

Registration terms and conditions

Summer Walks are of shorter duration, in warmer weather and generally in more accessible areas, the recommendations on appropriate clothing should be modified to suit the walk and weather conditions. If unsure, please check with the walk leader.

There is no Hot Weather Policy for Summer Walks. However if weather is severe or the conditions do not suit the particular walk a Summer Walk may be cancelled. Your Walk Leader will send an email to all walkers to advise of the cancellation. We suggest you check your emails before leaving to join the walk.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
