Minor update to include three re-routes:

v4.6 6/11/2023

Minor update to include two re-routes:

  • Mapsheet 1D: Mt Magnificent re-route of alternate route which has created a loop allowing walkers easier access to the summit of Mt Magnificent.
  • Mapsheet 2C: Warren Conservation Park correction of trail line to reflect current trail route

v4.5 14/8/2023

No re-reroutes of GPS files were changed, however the Trail Distances table has been corrected from an issue that arose in the v4.4 07/08/2023 re-routes. Some distances were erroneous, and have now been corrected.

v4.4 7/8/2023

Two re-routes and corrections of the trail path in the downloadable GPX file and Interactive Map. These re-routes have also had a minor overall 2km impact on the Heysen Trail Distances.

The following re-routes, updates and corrections have been added:

  1. Mapsheet 1C - a minor re-route relating to the original September 2014 version of Map sheet 1 (Cape Jervis to Kuitpo).
  2. Mapsheet 1D and 2A: v4.3 dated 2nd August incorrectly showed the main route and alternate route at Knott Hill Plantation (Kuitpo Forest) swapped around. This has been corrected in this version.

A collection of re-routes and corrections of the trail path in the downloadable GPX file and Interactive Map. These re-routes have also had a minor overall 2km impact on the Heysen Trail Distances.

The following re-routes, updates and corrections have been added:

  1. Mapsheet 1A - A minor 2km re-route away from the road at Tapanappa, and a spur trail from Tapanappa into the Yapari Ngawanthi/Cliffs 'walk-in' site
  2. Mapsheet 1B - As part of the development of the Wild South Coast Way on the Heysen Trail the Kings Head Hike spur trail into Victor Harbor has been waymarked. The trail branches off the main Heysen Trail at Kings Beach and heads to Kent Reserve, Victor Harbor.
  3. Mapsheet 1D: Re-route at Kyeema – exit off Woodgate Hill Rd
  4. Mapsheet 1D and 2A - Re-route at Chookarloo Campground, Kuitpo Forest
  5. Mapsheet 1D and 2A: Alternate Route at Knott Hill Plantation (Kuitpo Forest)
  6. Mapsheet 2D - Re-route near the Old School House, Mt Crawford Forest
  7. Mapsheet 4B - Realignment of the trail east of Mt Bryan
  8. Mapsheet 8C - Yuluna realignment to follow the Yuluna loop walk trail, Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park

The following re-routes, updates and corrections have been added:

  1. Mapsheet 2B - minor correction of display of trail route around Morialta Barns
  2. Mapsheet 2D - reroute of trail along Tower Rd/Ross Fire Track to take the trail off Wirra Wirra Rd
  3. Mapsheet 3A - minor correction of display of trail route to show it following Roennfeldt Rd near Sturt Highway
  4. Mapsheet 4A - show reroute of trail through the southern part of Caroona Creek Conservation Park, and more accurate alignment in the northern part of the Conservation Park
  5. Mapsheet 5B - show reroute of trail through main street of Crystal Brook
  6. Mapsheet 5B - show reroute of trail north of Bowman Park
  7. Mapsheet 6A - show reroute of trail in Wirrabara forest approaching Block 9 Road
  8. Mapsheet 6A - include alternate Heysen Trail route of the The Dutchmans Stern Hike
  9. Mapsheet 6B - minor realignment of route along the Pine Track

v4.0 16/2/2021

This is a major update, the first 185km of the trail path in the downloadable GPX file and Interactive Map has been updated to be have 10x more detail.

Updated Mapsheets are:

  1. Mapsheet 1: Cape Jervis to Kuitpo Forest (all four submaps)
  2. Mapsheet 2A: Kuitpo Forest to Bridgewater Oval - the first 27km to 3km south of Mylor (submaps 2B, 2C and 2D have not yet been updated)

We will progressively update the trail path further along the trail through the mapsheets.

v3.23 15/2/2021

The following 12 re-routes and alterations have been added:

  1. Mapsheet 1B: a minor 400m correction to the trail at Waitpinga, a temporary re-route that was put in place sometime ago but can now be considered permanent, has been added now to improve accuracy.
  2. Mapsheet 1C: a 600m re-route up The Sugarloaf, north of Inman Valley. An improved realignment was marked in November 2020.
  3. Mapsheet 2A: A minor clarification of trail route in Kuitpo Forest near Mt Bold to remove an obsolete temporary reourte.
  4. Mapsheet 2A/2B: A minor clarification of trail route past Bridgewater Oval.
  5. Mapsheet 2B: correction to the first 600m of spur trail to Hahndorf starting from Bridgewater Playground.
  6. Mapsheet 2B: when entering Morialta Conservation Park from Norton Summit, there is a 140m long low water crossing and when water levels are high there is a 1.6km long high water crossing alternate route.
  7. Mapsheet 2B: the reoute through Morialta Conservation Park has been tidied up in the GPS files.
  8. Mapsheet 6A: a correction to the GPS file to include the 2015 reroute along Sheepyard Track.
  9. Mapsheet 6B: A minor along streets within Melrose, re-route down Brewery and Lambert Sts.
  10. Mapsheet 7A: the north and south routes around the waterfall upstream from Depot Creek have been tidied up.
  11. Mapsheet 8A: a 3km section of the trail south Red Range Campsite has been tidied up.
  12. Mapsheet 8B: The trail has been adjusted when passing the Wilpena Information Centre. The new 800m route avoids the 1.5km route around the resort and caravan park.

  • Minor re-route of Heysen Trail in Bridgewater, along Ayr St and Beadnell Crescent, rejoining the trail at the southern edge of Bridgewater oval, Mapsheet 2A Kuitpo Office to Bridgewater Oval
  • Minor re-route of Heysen Trail in the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, Mapsheet 2B, Bridgewater Oval to Stone Hut Road
  • Minor re-route of Heysen Trail in Cleland Conservation Park north of Reynolds Drive, Mapsheet 2B Bridgewater Oval to Stone Hut Road
  • Minor re-route to re-instate low level river crossing along Colonial Drive into Morialta Conservation Park, Mapsheet 2B Bridgewater Oval to Stone Hut Road
  • Minor amendment to show 2017 re-route of Heysen Trail near Chain of Ponds, Mapsheet 2C Stone Hut Road to Tower Hill
  • Addition of alternate route through the centre of Kapunda, Mapsheet 3A Tanunda to Kapunda
  • Minor amendment to show 2013 re-route of Heysen Trail near Huppatz Hut, Mapsheet 3D Tothill Gap to Burra
  • Minor re-route of Heysen Trail near the Bundaleer Reservoir, taking the trail off the main road and across farmland, Mapsheet 5A Spalding to Hiskeys Hut
  • Opening of a spur trail from Warren Gorge to the Heysen Trail, with Section 50 from Eyre Depot to Buckaringa being split into two smaller more manageable sections: Section 50 Eyre Depot to Warren Gorge, and Section 51 Warren Gorge to Buckaringa. Mapsheet 7A Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park to north of Mt Arden

  • Re-route in Second Valley Forest to take the Heysen Trail past Robinson Hill Campsite, maps S2.2 and S2.3
  • Re-route in Kuitpo Forest near Mt Bold, which was marked by ForestrySA sometime in 2011, map S3.1
  • Re-route along Horrocks Pass, to take the Heysen Trail off of the bitumen roadside, map N3.4

The following corrections have been made:

  • Fine-tuning of Heysen Trail at Cape Jervis, immediately after trailhead, map S1.1
  • Minor re-route (max 80m parallel to original trail) at Naiko Inlet included, too minor to post as separate re-route

New campsite added - N2.4 Beetaloo Tank Camp Site.

The following two re-routes have been added:

  • The spur trail from the main trail on the ridge in Wirrabara Forest via the Old Nursery and beyond to Ippinitchie Campsite has been truncated at the Old Nursery (N2.6).
  • A minor re-route near Bundaleer Tank Camp Site, the trail no longer crosses the weir, and remains on the eastern side of Never Never Creek (N1.2)

ADDENDUM: The Red Range campsite, which was moved in March 2011, was only moved 200m north of its previous location. The Heysen Trail passes directly through the campsite.

  • N5.1 re-route at the northern end of Yourambulla Range avoiding an area of aboriginal significance
  • N5.7 correction of trail line to include a re-route between Black Gap and Bridle Gap which had previously been omitted (re-route was included in 2010 guidebook)

Edited items:

  • Fire Ban District boundaries updated with accurate GPS data from the CFS
  • S1.3 trail file error corrected on small section of the beach

1 waypoint added:

  • S2.4 Heysen's Rest Bed & Breakfast accommodation added

  • N4.3 location of Eyre Depot shelter and campsite updated with more accurate information (campsite was previously marked as being 160m north of actual location. Campsite is 400m south of monument, beside trail
