Honorary Member Doug Leane crosses his last stile

Long-standing Friends Honorary Member, Doug Leane, died this week, aged 82.

He had been in poor health for the last few months, and died in hospital, following a turn at home.

He will be remembered by the Friends and walkers for his dedication and enthusiasm for maintenance of the section around the Warren/Hale Conservation Park, Mount Crawford and Freeman’s Hut.

He was also a very keen walker (until relatively recently).

For many years he took his team out every Thursday for maintenance and was often involved in helping other section leaders.

There are few huts along the Trail that do not have something of Doug’s handiwork in their maintenance or in their furnishings.

The Friends extend sincere sympathy to his family.

Kokoda 2009 Cancelled

Kokoda – The Return has been cancelled due to lack of participants.

Nevertheless, I plan to undertake the trek in June as part of one of BackTrack’s Team groups.

I would welcome others to join me and I can be contacted through the Friends office.

We are planning another Kokoda Trek in 2010

End 2 End 3

Kapunda Great Success.

What looked like a steamy weekend turned into a milder one, with some great walking, great people and some very good food.

As with all end of the year affairs, the weather can play a big part in messing up the best laid plans.

For those that wimped out, you can catch-up with E2E4 in 2010!!

Tassie Members Complete Mini Heysen Trek

Jenny Benn and David Sands, two of our Tasmanian members, have completed almost a month on the Trail.

They walked from Kapunda to Cape Jervis, using a variety of B and B’s, camping out and some luxury hotel accommodation (if you could call the Victor Harbor Hotel luxury). The walk took them from 3rd September to 1st October and from the various SMS messages and phone conversations they had a great time, albeit wet on occasions.

Loved the Trail, the variety, struggled up the hills, were almost blown away at Mount Cone.

Overall they thought the Trail in great shape.
