Two environmental programs in the coming month

There are two environmental programs in the coming month.

Firstly, the Cape Jervis Coastal Community Group is having a working bee on Saturday 6 April and Sunday 7 April, removing tree guards from Lands End, which will be repurposed elsewhere along the Heysen Trail, collecting plant material and a cuttings workshop. Further information is available on the CJCCG’s website.

Secondly, there is a Cactus Kill week near Palmer, organised by the SA Murray Darling Basin NRM Board. From Monday 29 April to Friday 3 May, accommodation is available, and day-trippers are welcome. Further information.

Working Bee at the Southern Trailhead

There is a working bee near the southern trailhead of the Heysen Trail at Cape Jervis. Run by the Cape Jervis Coastal Community Group, volunteers are needed to assist on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd December.

Saturday 1st December

10am – 12.30pm: removing tree guards near Lands End (tree guards to be re-used by the Friends of the Heysen Trail)

12.30pm – 2pm: BBQ lunch provided

2pm – 4pm: woody weed lopping and seed collecting

Sunday 2nd December

10am – 12noon: seed sowing

Last Sunday’s Walk for Nature

Last Sunday’s Walk for Nature with Nature Foundation SA went well – a sunny day with $32,000 raised towards conservation projects.

The Friends of the Heysen Trail led two groups, Mary Cartland lead the 12km walk, and president Robert Alcock led a smaller group, including a number of families with pushers, on the 3km walk.

The Friends were proud to be involved in supporting the Nature Foundation who have been involved in many conservation projects in South Australia, some of which the Heysen Trail traverses.

Walk for Nature is in two weeks, join now!

The Walk for Nature is coming up on Sunday 21st October. Join the Friends of the Heysen Trail team to walk the 12km return route, or register as an individual or new team to walk either the 3, 6 or 12km return walk along the Heysen Trail from Bridgewater Oval to Woodhouse Activity Centre. Help Nature Foundation SA to raise money to conserve, restore, and sustainably manage South Australia’s wildlife and environment.

Walk for Nature by the Nature Foundation SA

Nature Foundation SA is holding its annual Walk for Nature on Sunday 21st October 2012 with a 3, 6 or 12km return walk along the Heysen Trail from Bridgewater Oval to Woodhouse Activity Centre. Join in to help them raise funds to conserve, restore and sustainably manage South Australia’s wildlife and environment.

Great Greening Opportunity

In conjunction with Forestry SA, we have been asked to plant over 600 trees, shrubs and grasses at the Centennial Drive campground at Mount Crawford. (Southern Guidebook, Map 3.9, Grid ref 135583)

We are looking for enthusiastic vounteers to be involved in this project and depending on numbers, the planting will be over one or two days.

Initial planting Wednesday 1st August.

If required follow-up Saturday 11th August.

The Greening goes from strength to strength

Another sterling effort by the Greening group who planted another two hundred, yes that’s right, two hundred trees around Hiskey’s Hit, near Georgetown.

This is additional to the planting of one hundred trees a few weeks ago.

If we get 50% survival, walkers will need machetes and secateurs to access the hut!!

Simply wonderful. Well done.

The Heysen Trail Green Team Turns the first sod

The Greening Commmittee had its first field day at Hiskeys Hut, planting over 100 trees, appropriate to the area. This is part of a much bigger project by the group to plant more than 200 trees around the hut.

As can be seen, it certainly needs it.

Great work from the Greening crew, Graham Bald, Steve Clift, Robyn Quinn and Neil Nosworthy.

Greening the Heysen Trail

The newly formed Greening Committee has set its first project for 2012. It is planned to survey and plant appropriate trees and understory around Hiskey’s Hut, near Georgetown.

Those who are familiar with Hiskey’s will be aware that the hut sits in an open, rather desolate road reserve and is a manageable first project.

It is planned to approach Trees for Life to provide surplus plants, from the 2012 season, for about 100 trees to plant around the hut.

The committee is looking for help with this project, planned dates for parts one (survey and hole digging) and two (planting) are late May and late June respectively.

Nature Foundation SA’s Walk for Nature

On Sunday our president, Robert Alcock, donned a bandanna and joined over 300 walkers on the Heysen Trail from Bridgewater to Woodhouse. The walk raised money and awareness for the work of the Nature Foundation of SA, a group dedicated to saving native wildlife and protecting our natural environment.
