Re-route of the Heysen Trail affecting Map 6.12, April 2011

The trail markers have now been placed, the trail now follows the route as published in the guidebook.

Due to SA Water OHS demands there is a minor alteration around Freshwater Creek Weir – the trail no longer passes over the weir wall. The channel has recently been reinstated after many years out of service.

From May 2010 until April 2011. With the publication of this edition the trail is shown as being re-routed through the town of Spalding. This re-route has not yet been marked, it is expected to be done prior to the commencement of the 2011 walking season in April, 2011. Until such time, the trail is marked from near the rubbish dump, south of Borve Road, as continuing along the drainage channel to Freshwater Weir.

Kangaroo Island Weekend Nov 2010

We had some fun, and most learnt new things, from climbing huge boulders, to shipwreck history, and John finally realising his huge fluro boy was better being released back to the wilds. Wonderful to see the profusion of wildflowers, incl orchids, and we did finally get to see a live koala. One kangaroo got a little too close, and went off with a bruised rump, the goannas stood their ground for the cameras, tho the echidna just wanted to run. From bleak windswept western cliffs, to a cosy waterfall amongst yakka valleys, to sandy Sahara, we walk and talked (well 2 never stopped), and lunched on the rocks at Australia’s most beautiful beach (Vivonne Bay). Robert failed in his attempt to better John’s swan dive into the water at Stokes Bay. Blue wrens thru the kitchen window, parrots, cockatoos and many others brought out Wendy’s birding binoculars. For the sweet of tooth, we finished off with a couple of honey ice-creams at the honey farm. A wonderful weekend we all had. How quickly they go. Thanks to; Hugh of Burra for leading us, on the bus and on the walks; to Kitchen Commander Mary, who ensured we never went hungry; and thanks to all the walkers who all pitched in to help out, from stacking the trailer, fire monitor Jenny baking us each evening, to helping fix Jack’s chocolate craving on Sat afternoon. It made it easy for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves, well most of us for most of the time. Congratulations to Judith who won the quiz – kms of bus travel on the weekend – 767km.

Re-route of the Heysen Trail affecting Map 4.5, July 2009

From July 2009 to early 2010 there will be major roadworks associated with the upgrading of the Sturt Highway near Greenock. A new bridge will be constructed along Roennfeldt Road over Greenock Creek. An additional carriageway will be built alongside the existing Sturt Highway which means Roennfeldt Road will be moved south of its current position. Another bridge for the highway will be constructed over Seppeltsfield Road.

Walkers are advised to use caution when walking along the road when machinery is operating. Take care when passing through the area and be sure plant and machinery operators or other workers are aware of your presence. Once the roadworks are complete the Heysen Trail will be rerouted along the Greenock Creek under the new Sturt Highway bridge, then along the northern side of the highway into Greenock.
